Shanghai Jinmao Tower, a landmark building in Shanghai's Lujiazui Financial and Trade Zone, was designed by the Chicago-based architectural firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM), with lead designer Adrian Smith. The tower stands at a height of 420.5 meters with 88 floors above ground, covering a site area of 24,000 square meters and a total construction area of 290,000 square meters. In June 1998, Shanghai Jinmao Tower received the Illinois World Architecture Award.
The core tube and giant columns of Jinmao Tower utilize standardized steel formwork. At the connections between the core tube and floor beams, the hotel area's ring beams and core tube reinforcements, and the giant columns and floor beams, a tapered thread connection construction technique was employed. The entire project used a total of 58,296 tapered thread joints, all of which met Class A standards based on testing and random inspections.
