CCTV Headquarters Building Project

The CCTV Headquarters Building, located in Beijing's Central Business District (CBD), began construction in 2004 and was completed in 2012. The building was designed by world-renowned architect Rem Koolhaas from the Netherlands, with the design led by the Dutch firm Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA).

The CCTV Headquarters covers a land area of 187,000 square meters, with a total construction area of approximately 550,000 square meters and a total steel usage of 140,000 tons. The main building consists of two towers that lean inward at a 6-degree angle in both directions, connected above 163 meters by an "L"-shaped cantilever structure. Its unique design and innovative structure earned it a place on TIME magazine's list of the top ten architectural wonders of 2007.

The cantilever at the top of the building extends 75 meters without any support below. During construction, the cantilever's weight required lateral force transmission to the two towers, resulting in significant bending moments and highly concentrated stress at the corners. To address this, the project team carefully selected straight-thread sleeves and welding as the primary methods for steel reinforcement connections. The thread bar coupler, which exceed the strength of the base material, ensured that the cantilever joints could withstand external forces such as wind and seismic loads.
